Network transport is performed at OSI layer 1 of the OSI model. The field of optics has grown quite diverse over the last several years and has permeated its way into almost all elements of communications. The latest advent to the optical market place is DWDM, which allows for a broader use of the light spectrum within the available fiber strands. Complex networks are able to exploit the enhanced capabilities of fiber using the newer techniques that are now available, one such method is the extending of the Local Area Network into the Wide Area Network and the capability to carry disparate data types on a single medium.
